Mommy makeover in Turkey: preparation and packing list

By Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer · Updated: 27 September 2026 · 6 min read

For a mommy makeover in Turkey, pack loose front-opening clothes, slip-on shoes, a phone charger with a long cable, your medical records and medication list, and a few small comforts for a 10 to 14 night stay; your first compression garment and surgical bra are usually fitted after surgery. Preparing your home matters just as much: arrange childcare, stop smoking well in advance and set up a recovery corner, because you will not be able to lift children or heavy bags for several weeks.

This guide is for mothers travelling to Istanbul for a mommy makeover. It covers what to do in the weeks before you fly, what goes in your suitcase, what to leave behind and how to get your home ready for the trip back. Your surgical team will give you a personal list; use this one to make sure nothing important slips through the cracks.

Your mommy makeover preparation timeline

Good preparation starts long before you book a flight. The table below shows a typical sequence; exact timing depends on your health, your surgeon's instructions and your travel plans.

WhenWhat to do
6–8 weeks beforeShare photos and your medical history for an online assessment; confirm your procedure plan and dates; stop smoking and all nicotine products; see your family doctor about any long-term conditions.
4 weeks beforeReview every medication and supplement with your surgical team; arrange childcare and time off work; book flights with a flexible return date if possible.
2 weeks beforePause blood-thinning medicines and supplements only as instructed; stop drinking alcohol; start cooking meals to freeze at home.
1 week beforePack; set up your recovery corner at home; confirm airport transfer and accommodation; complete any blood tests you have been asked for.
Day before surgeryFace-to-face consultation, markings and pre-operative tests in Istanbul; fasting from the time you are given.

Medical preparation before you travel

Smoking, alcohol and medications

Nicotine narrows small blood vessels and is one of the biggest avoidable risks for wound-healing problems after a tummy tuck. Surgeons generally ask you to stop every nicotine product, including vapes and patches, weeks before surgery; for a tummy tuck or breast lift this is often at least four weeks. Aspirin, some anti-inflammatory painkillers, fish oil and certain herbal products can increase bleeding. Never stop a prescribed medicine on your own; ask first. Our guide to smoking, alcohol and blood thinners before plastic surgery sets out the usual timings.

Documents to have ready

  • A complete list of your medications, doses and any allergies, in English
  • Reports from previous operations, especially C-sections or other abdominal surgery
  • Recent blood test results if your team has requested them
  • Details of long-term conditions such as thyroid disease, asthma or high blood pressure
  • Your passport, travel insurance documents and your patient coordinator's contact details

Weight and general health

Aim to arrive at a stable weight and in good general health. This is not the moment for a crash diet: your body heals best when it is well nourished, with enough protein, iron and fluids. If you have had a cold or any infection in the weeks before travel, tell your team.

What to pack for a mommy makeover in Turkey

After surgery your abdomen will feel tight, you will walk slightly bent forward for a few days, and lifting your arms above your head will be uncomfortable because of the breast surgery. Pack for that version of yourself.

CategoryWhat to bringWhy it helps
ClothesZip-up or button-front tops, loose dresses, soft high-waisted joggers one size upEasy to put on without raising your arms; nothing presses on the incision

UnderwearSoft cotton briefs with a comfortable waistbandComfort around the lower scar
ComfortTravel neck pillow, a small cushion for the seatbelt, lip balm, eye mask, earplugsBetter rest in hospital and on the flight
ElectronicsPhone, charger with a long cable, power bank, headphonesHospital sockets are often out of reach of the bed
ToiletriesMild unscented soap, dry shampoo, body lotion (not for incisions), wet wipesShowering is limited at first
HealthYour regular prescription medicines in their original packaging, compression stockings if advisedContinuity of care and a more comfortable flight
Small extrasBendy straws, a refillable water bottle, light snacks your team approves, a notebook for drain outputMakes drinking and tracking easier

What to leave at home

  • Jewellery, including rings, and valuables you would not want to leave in a hospital room
  • Skinny jeans, fitted dresses and anything that pulls on over your head
  • A heavy suitcase: choose a light four-wheeled case and plan for someone else to lift it
  • Your own painkillers or supplements unless your team has approved them
  • Self-tanner and heavily perfumed creams

Compression garments and surgical bras are usually fitted in the operating room. Ask your team whether you need a spare so one can be washed while you wear the other, and check before buying your own, because the correct size and style matter.

Should you bring a companion?

Travelling with an adult companion is strongly recommended. For the first few days you will need help getting in and out of bed, with meals and with carrying anything at all. A companion also makes the flight home easier by handling luggage, check-in and long walks through the airport. Children are best left at home with someone you trust, both because you cannot lift them and because rest is part of healing. Our international patients page explains how transfers and accommodation are usually arranged.

How long should you plan to stay?

Most international patients plan 10 to 14 nights in Istanbul. That covers the consultation, one or two nights in hospital, drain removal and a final check before you are cleared to fly. Book a flexible return ticket if you can. For the detail, read how long a mommy makeover takes and how long to stay in Istanbul.

Get your home ready before you leave

A little work before you travel pays off when you come home tired, swollen and unable to lift.

  1. Childcare: arrange help for at least the first two to four weeks after you return. Lifting small children is usually restricted for around six weeks; your surgeon will confirm the exact timing.
  2. A recovery corner: a recliner, or a bed with enough pillows to keep your head raised and knees bent, a side table within reach and a clear path to the bathroom.
  3. Kitchen and bathroom: move everyday items to waist height so you do not have to stretch up or bend down.
  4. Meals: batch-cook simple, protein-rich meals and freeze them; stock up on water and high-fibre foods to help prevent constipation.
  5. Work and driving: plan a return to desk work after about two to three weeks, and do not drive until you can brake hard without pain and are off strong painkillers.

Travel day and surgery day

On the flight to Istanbul, wear comfortable clothes, drink water, walk the aisle and skip alcohol. On the day of surgery you will usually be asked to fast for several hours, remove nail polish or gel nails if requested, take off all jewellery and avoid putting creams on your skin. Shower when instructed, either the evening before or that morning. Take your medication list and this checklist to the hospital.

A final word

A calm, organised start makes recovery noticeably easier. Once your dates are set, write down your questions, share your medical history in full and go through this list again a week before departure. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer and his team will confirm your personal instructions at your consultation.

Frequently Asked Questions

What should I wear after a mommy makeover?

Front-opening tops with zips or buttons, loose dresses and soft joggers one size up are the most practical. Raising your arms is uncomfortable for the first days because of the breast surgery, so avoid anything that pulls over your head, and bring slip-on shoes.

Do I need to buy a compression garment before I travel?

Usually not. Your first compression garment and surgical bra are normally fitted in the operating room. Ask your team whether you need a spare and which size and style is suitable before buying one yourself.

Can I bring my children to Istanbul?

It is possible but generally not recommended. Lifting children is restricted for several weeks after surgery and you will need plenty of rest. Most mothers find it easier to leave children at home with someone they trust and travel with one adult companion.

What should I have with me on the flight home?

Wear your compression garment, use compression stockings if advised, choose an aisle seat, put a small cushion under the seatbelt and keep your medicines in your hand luggage. Drink water and walk the aisle every hour or two.

How far ahead should I stop smoking?

For a tummy tuck or breast lift, many surgeons ask for at least four weeks without nicotine before surgery, with two weeks as a general minimum. That includes vapes and patches. Your surgeon will confirm the timing for you.
