What Is a Mommy Makeover and Who Is a Good Candidate?

By Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer · Updated: 27 September 2026 · 6 min read

A mommy makeover is a combined plastic surgery plan that addresses the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding leave on the abdomen, breasts and waistline, most often a tummy tuck, a breast lift with or without implants, and liposuction. You are likely to be a good candidate if you have finished having children, stopped breastfeeding several months ago, are at a stable weight close to your goal, and are in good general health.

What does a mommy makeover include?

"Mommy makeover" is not the name of a single operation. It describes a tailored combination of procedures chosen around what pregnancy changed for you. The usual building blocks are:

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): removes loose skin and repairs the separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti) that no amount of core training can close. A tummy tuck sits at the centre of most plans.
  • Breast lift (mastopexy): raises the nipple back to its natural position and reshapes tissue that has stretched during breastfeeding.
  • Breast implants or fat transfer: restore the upper-pole fullness that often disappears after weaning, and can be combined with the lift in the same session.
  • Liposuction: removes stubborn fat from the flanks, back, hips and thighs to define the waist.

Some patients add a smaller procedure such as labiaplasty or an arm lift, but the core of the plan is always the abdomen, the breasts and how fat is distributed between them.

What pregnancy actually changes

Over nine months the abdominal wall is stretched well beyond its elastic limit; the skin thins, and the two long rectus muscles can drift apart along the midline. Breastfeeding takes the breasts through a cycle of enlargement and shrinkage that leaves the skin envelope looser and the nipple lower than before. Hormonal changes also encourage fat to settle around the waist and hips. Diet and exercise are excellent at getting the weight back off, but they cannot re-tighten separated muscles, remove excess skin or move a nipple. A mommy makeover is designed specifically for the changes that exercise cannot fix.

Who is a good candidate?

Timing after pregnancy and breastfeeding

Most surgeons recommend waiting at least 6 to 12 months after your last delivery and at least 3 to 6 months after you stop breastfeeding. Breast volume and abdominal skin need that time to settle into their final state; operate too early and you are planning around a body that is still changing.

Weight stability and BMI

Results are most predictable when your weight has been stable for at least 3 to 6 months and you are within reach of your goal. Significant weight gain or loss after surgery can loosen the skin again. As for body mass index, a BMI of around 30 or below is generally preferred for a combined procedure, because higher values increase anaesthetic risk and wound-healing complications. This is a guideline rather than a hard rule and is assessed individually.

Future pregnancy

Getting pregnant after a mommy makeover is not dangerous, but it will stretch the repaired muscles and tightened skin again and can undo much of the result. For this reason the procedure is best considered once your family is complete.

General health and smoking

Uncontrolled diabetes, clotting disorders and active smoking all impair healing. Smokers are asked to stop for several weeks before and after surgery, and nicotine products of any kind count.

Single session or staged?

The main advantage of combining procedures is one anaesthetic, one recovery period and, for international patients, one trip. The trade-off is a longer operation, which raises the risk of blood clots and increases blood loss and fatigue. The decision depends on the total operating time and on your health profile.

A tummy tuck, breast lift and moderate liposuction can be safely combined in most healthy patients. When large-volume liposuction or additional procedures are on the list, splitting the plan into two stages is often the wiser choice.

What results to expect, and what not to

Realistic expectations are the strongest predictor of satisfaction. A mommy makeover aims to deliver:

  • A flatter abdomen and better posture from a repaired muscle wall
  • Nipples restored to a natural height with fuller upper breasts
  • A defined waistline and more balanced proportions

What it will not deliver: a scar-free result (the tummy tuck scar sits low enough to hide under underwear but is permanent), the complete removal of stretch marks (only those on the excised skin disappear) or weight loss. The shape becomes clear as swelling subsides over 3 to 6 months, and scars continue to fade for up to a year.

What recovery looks like

  1. First week: one or two nights in hospital; you walk slightly bent at the waist after a tummy tuck, and any drains are usually removed in this period.
  2. Weeks 2 to 3: desk work is possible; a compression garment and support bra are worn continuously.
  3. Week 6: lifting and exercise are gradually reintroduced.
  4. Months 3 to 12: swelling resolves, scars soften and the final result settles.

For mothers of small children the most practical issue is that lifting is restricted for the first couple of weeks, so arranging help at home makes a real difference.

Planning from abroad

For patients travelling from the UK, the US, Canada, Europe or the Middle East, assessment begins with photographs and an online consultation, after which the surgery date, length of stay and follow-up visits are planned. After a combined procedure we usually advise staying in Istanbul for around 7 to 10 days so that the first check-up is completed before you fly. Our international patients page explains the whole process.

If you would like to know whether a mommy makeover suits you, send your photographs via WhatsApp for an assessment. You can read more about the procedure on our mommy makeover in Turkey page.

Frequently Asked Questions

How long after giving birth should I wait for a mommy makeover?

Most surgeons advise waiting at least 6 to 12 months after your last delivery and at least 3 to 6 months after you stop breastfeeding, so that breast volume and abdominal skin have settled.

Can I get pregnant after a mommy makeover?

Yes, there is no medical barrier. However, a new pregnancy will stretch the repaired muscles and tightened skin again and can undo much of the result, so the procedure is best planned once your family is complete.

Can everything be done in one session?

A tummy tuck, breast lift and moderate liposuction can be combined in a single session for most healthy patients. If the procedure list is long or there are added risk factors, a two-stage plan may be safer; this is decided at consultation.

Will a mommy makeover help me lose weight?

No. It is a body-contouring operation, not a weight-loss method. Results are best when you are close to your goal weight and your weight has been stable for several months.

Do stretch marks disappear?

Only the stretch marks on the skin removed during the tummy tuck, usually below the navel, are gone. Marks above the navel are moved lower but are not erased.

How long should I stay in Istanbul if I am travelling from abroad?

After a combined procedure we usually advise around 7 to 10 days, so that your first follow-up is completed before you fly home. The exact length depends on the procedures performed.
