What Is Rhinoplasty?
Rhinoplasty reshapes the bone and cartilage framework of the nose and, when necessary, corrects internal structures such as the septum and turbinates. The goal is not simply a smaller nose: the profile line, tip rotation, nostril width and the relationship between the nose and upper lip are all brought into balance with the face.
Two broad philosophies are used today. Preservation rhinoplasty keeps as much of the natural bridge as possible, while structural rhinoplasty reinforces the framework with cartilage grafts. Dr. Esmer combines both as each patient requires; which approach dominates is decided during the physical examination.
Who Is a Good Candidate?
Rhinoplasty in Istanbul is one of the most requested facial procedures, but no two plans are the same. An assessment is generally recommended if you have:
- A hump, excess width or a collapsed area on the bridge
- A drooping, bulbous or asymmetric tip
- Difficulty breathing caused by a deviated septum, enlarged turbinates or weak nasal valves
- A crooked nose or deformity following injury
- A previous rhinoplasty that needs correction
Facial growth should be complete, so patients are usually assessed from around 17–18 years of age. Uncontrolled medical conditions, active smoking and unrealistic expectations directly affect the plan, and these are discussed openly at the first consultation.
Rhinoplasty Techniques
The technique is chosen according to the existing structure of your nose and the change you want. Several techniques are often combined in a single operation.
Open rhinoplasty
A small incision across the columella (the bridge of skin between the nostrils) allows the skin to be lifted so the whole framework is seen directly. It is preferred for marked asymmetry, extensive tip work and revision surgery. The scar fades over time.
Closed rhinoplasty
All incisions are inside the nostrils, leaving no visible external scar. Swelling is typically less and recovery somewhat faster. It suits hump reduction and limited tip refinement.
Ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty
Instead of traditional rasps and chisels, the bone is shaped with a piezoelectric device that uses ultrasonic vibration. It cuts bone only, sparing soft tissue and blood vessels, which means less bruising and more controlled contouring. Dr. Esmer uses piezo technology in suitable patients.
Functional rhinoplasty (septoplasty)
A deviated septum, enlarged turbinates and weak nasal valves are corrected in the same operation. Breathing and appearance are treated together; a purely cosmetic operation should never ignore an airway problem.
Tip plasty
When the bridge is straight and only the tip is drooping, wide or undefined, the tip cartilages are reshaped without touching the bone. Recovery is shorter.
Revision rhinoplasty
A previously operated nose involves scar tissue, depleted cartilage and altered anatomy, so planning is more complex. Cartilage grafts from the ear or rib are used when needed. At least 12 months should pass after the previous operation before revision.
Male and female rhinoplasty
In men, a straighter bridge, a less rotated tip and strong lines are preserved; over-reduction and an upturned tip weaken a masculine face. In women, a gentle bridge line and a slightly more rotated tip are usually more harmonious. In both cases, the reference is your own face.
Ethnic considerations
Thick skin, wide nostrils and a low bridge call for a different plan. The aim is not to erase ethnic identity but to create a nose in harmony with your own features, so additional steps such as grafting and alar base reduction are discussed in advance.
First Consultation and Planning
If you live abroad or outside Istanbul, assessment usually starts with photographs: front, both profiles, base view and 45-degree views, without make-up and in good light, collected by our team and reviewed by Dr. Esmer. A video consultation then covers your expectations, any breathing complaints and previous surgery.
At the in-person examination the inside of the nose is assessed endoscopically, and skin thickness and cartilage strength are checked by hand. In suitable patients, digital simulation makes it easier to agree on the goal of the operation, but a simulation is a planning tool, not a promise. Blood tests, a CT scan if required and an anaesthetic assessment are completed before surgery.
Preparing for Surgery
- Stop smoking and all nicotine products at least 3–4 weeks before surgery; nicotine impairs wound healing and skin circulation.
- Stop aspirin, ibuprofen and other blood-thinning medicines, as well as supplements such as vitamin E, omega-3, ginkgo and garlic, 10 days beforehand with your doctor's knowledge. If you take prescription anticoagulants, tell us in advance.
- Avoid alcohol in the week before surgery.
- Do not eat or drink anything after midnight on the night before the operation.
- Bring a comfortable front-opening top, your passport or ID, a list of your regular medicines and your glasses if you normally wear contact lenses.
- Let the team know if you develop a cold, fever or an active nasal infection, as surgery may need to be postponed.
The Day of Surgery
You are admitted to hospital in the morning. The anaesthetic team reviews you again, and Dr. Esmer completes the pre-operative markings and goes over the plan with you one last time. Rhinoplasty is performed under general anaesthesia and takes around 2–3 hours depending on its scope; functional and revision cases can take longer.
At the end of the operation a thermoplastic splint is placed on the bridge and soft silicone splints, which still allow you to breathe, are placed inside the nose. Traditional tight packing is not used. You stay one night in hospital and are discharged the next morning after a check, returning to your hotel or home.
Recovery and Aftercare
Recovery after rhinoplasty is gradual; the first few days bring the most swelling and bruising. The points below summarise what to expect and what to look after.
- Swelling and bruising: Bruising under the eyes usually fades within 7–10 days and is noticeably less with the piezo technique. Tip swelling can take up to 12 months to settle fully, particularly in thicker skin.
- Splint and tapes: The external splint and internal silicones are usually removed on day 6–7. Taping may be advised for a further 1–2 weeks.
- Sleeping position: Sleep on your back with your head raised for the first 2 weeks; avoid sleeping on your side or front.
- Washing: You can shower without wetting your face until the splint comes off, then wash normally.
- Exercise: Gentle walking is fine from day one. Wait 4–6 weeks for strenuous exercise, weight training and swimming, and 3 months for contact sports.
- Sun: Avoid direct sun for the first 3 months and use a high-factor sunscreen; sun prolongs swelling and can cause discolouration.
- Glasses: If bone work was done, avoid glasses resting on the bridge for 6–8 weeks.
- Nasal care: Clean inside the nose with the saline spray and ointment provided, and avoid blowing your nose for the first 2 weeks.
Risks and How They Are Minimised
As with any operation, rhinoplasty carries risks including bleeding, infection, reactions to anaesthesia, prolonged swelling, temporary changes in breathing, asymmetry and a result that does not fully match expectations. Occasionally a minor touch-up (revision) may be needed.
To keep these risks as low as possible, surgery is performed in a fully equipped hospital with an experienced anaesthetic team; pre-operative tests screen for bleeding and infection risk; smoking and blood-thinner rules are strictly applied; tissue-friendly techniques such as piezo are preferred; and follow-up continues throughout the first year. The most important safeguard, however, is building a realistic plan together before surgery.
For International Patients
For patients travelling from Europe, the UK and the Middle East, the rhinoplasty process is managed by a single coordinator from your first message. The initial assessment is done by photographs and video call, and the surgery date is fixed once your travel dates are confirmed.
- Stay in Istanbul: 7–8 days is recommended, covering the pre-operative examination and the splint-removal appointment.
- Flying: You can fly once the splint has been removed and your final check is complete; cabin pressure does not harm the healing nose.
- Follow-up: After you return home, photo and video reviews continue via WhatsApp at 1, 3, 6 and 12 months.
- Coordination: Airport transfers, hotel options close to the hospital and an interpreter at the hospital and at appointments are arranged by our team.

How the Price Is Determined
There is no single answer to the question of nose job Turkey cost or rhinoplasty in Turkey prices, because every nose needs a different operation. Under Turkish law, medical services cannot be advertised with prices, so no fees are listed on this website. A personalised quote is sent to you after your assessment.
The main factors that shape the quote are:
- Scope of surgery: tip-only, full rhinoplasty, and whether functional correction is included
- Primary versus revision surgery, and whether grafts are needed in revision
- Technique and technology used (for example, piezo)
- Operating time, anaesthesia and hospital stay
- Additional procedures planned in the same session, such as eyelid surgery
- Accommodation and transfer package for international patients
Why Dr. Göktuğ Esmer?
Dr. Göktuğ Esmer is a board-certified plastic, reconstructive and aesthetic surgeon and a member of ISAPS, the International Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgery. In rhinoplasty, his priority is a nose that looks as though it belongs to your face, planned on proportion and protective of breathing.
- Natural results: Planning based on your facial proportions, not a template
- Function: Appearance and breathing are addressed in the same operation
- Safety: Fully equipped hospital, experienced anaesthetic team, tissue-friendly techniques
- Close follow-up: Regular reviews throughout the first year, with remote follow-up for international patients
To start a preliminary assessment, send your photographs via the contact page. Where the whole face is being planned, combination with procedures such as a facelift can also be considered.

Frequently Asked Questions – Rhinoplasty in Turkey (Nose Job)
Is rhinoplasty painful?
The operation is performed under general anaesthesia, so you feel nothing during surgery. Afterwards most patients describe congestion and pressure rather than pain, and simple painkillers are usually enough.
Will my nose be packed after surgery?
Traditional tight packing is not used. Thin silicone splints that still allow you to breathe are placed inside the nose and are usually removed within a week.
When will I see the result?
The overall shape is visible when the splint comes off, and most swelling settles within the first 1–2 months. Fine tip definition can take up to 12 months.
Can rhinoplasty improve my breathing?
Yes. A deviated septum, enlarged turbinates and valve problems can be corrected during the same operation, and are added to the plan if you have breathing complaints.
Is ultrasonic (piezo) rhinoplasty suitable for everyone?
It can be used in most patients who need bone reshaping. If only the tip is being treated, the bone is not touched and the piezo device is not needed.
How long should I wait before revision rhinoplasty?
At least 12 months after the previous operation is recommended, so that the tissues soften and the result becomes clear.
At what age can I have rhinoplasty?
Once facial growth is complete, usually from 17–18 years. There is no upper age limit; general health is the deciding factor.
How long do I need to stay in Istanbul?
We recommend 7–8 days, covering the pre-operative examination and the splint-removal appointment. Later reviews are done via WhatsApp and video call.
Will there be a visible scar?
The closed technique leaves no external scar. With the open technique, the short incision under the columella fades over the months and is rarely noticeable.
When can I wear glasses again?
If bone work was done, avoid glasses resting on the bridge for 6–8 weeks and use contact lenses where possible.
