Mommy makeover recovery week by week

By Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer · Updated: 27 September 2026 · 6 min read

Short answer: after a mommy makeover you spend the first one to three days in hospital, the first week in Istanbul with drains and compression garments, weeks two to four easing back into daily life at home, and you return to exercise at six to eight weeks; the final result settles between six and twelve months. Everyone heals at their own pace, but this timeline is a realistic map for the great majority of patients.

What a mommy makeover involves and what shapes recovery

A mommy makeover is a combination of procedures that addresses the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding leave behind, in a single operation. It usually pairs a tummy tuck and liposuction with breast surgery (a lift, augmentation or reduction). How long recovery takes depends on which procedures are combined, your age and general health, and how much help you have at home. The timeline below is written for a typical mommy makeover that includes a tummy tuck and breast surgery.

Days 0-3: in hospital

Surgery is performed under general anaesthesia and most patients stay one or two nights. The first 24 hours are the most tiring; pain relief and, where needed, muscle relaxants keep you comfortable. Because the abdominal muscles have been repaired, you will be asked to walk slightly bent at the waist and lie with your knees bent, which takes tension off the abdominal closure.

  • Short walks with a nurse begin on the first day; this is the single most important step for reducing clot risk.
  • One or two drains sit in the abdomen and the fluid volume is recorded daily.
  • Your compression garment and surgical bra are fitted in theatre.
  • Nausea, a low-grade temperature and fatigue are normal in the first 48 hours.

Week 1: in Istanbul with drains and garments

After discharge you rest at your hotel. The goal this week is not to feel recovered but to give your body time.

Drains

Drains are typically removed between day three and day seven, once daily output falls below a set level. Removal takes a few seconds and is not painful. Showering with drains in place is possible with your surgeon's approval; most patients are cleared to shower freely the day after the drains come out.

Garments

The abdominal compression garment is worn day and night for the first six weeks, removed only for showering. It limits swelling, supports the tissue and helps the skin settle onto the underlying layers. A supportive, wire-free surgical bra is worn for the same period.

Movement and nutrition

Walking for a few minutes every hour, drinking plenty of water and eating a protein-rich diet directly speed up healing. Constipation is common with pain medication; fibre and, if needed, a mild laxative help.

Fit-to-fly check

For patients from abroad the final review is usually on day seven to ten: incisions and drain sites are checked and you are cleared to fly. Compression stockings and regular walks up the aisle are recommended on the flight.

Weeks 2-4: back home and into daily life

Pain gives way to tightness and numbness. Reduced sensation across the lower abdomen can last for months and is expected. Swelling fluctuates: less in the morning, more by evening.

  • Posture: most patients stand fully upright by the end of week two. Let it improve day by day rather than forcing it.
  • Walking: 20-30 minutes of flat walking a day is encouraged.
  • Housework: light tasks are fine; bending, vacuuming and heavy lifting are not.
  • Work: two to three weeks is realistic for a desk job, six weeks for physical work.

Lifting children, driving and sleeping position

Lifting children

This is one of the questions we hear most often. Because the abdominal muscles have been repaired, nothing heavier than roughly 4-5 kg (about 10 lb) should be lifted for the first four to six weeks, and that includes babies and toddlers. You can still spend time with your child sitting down and letting them climb onto your lap. Arranging family support or help for this period is as important as the surgery itself.

Driving

You can drive once you have stopped taking prescription pain relief and can brake hard without bracing your abdomen, usually from week two or three. A folded towel between the seatbelt and the abdominal scar prevents rubbing.

Sleeping position

For the first two to three weeks sleep on your back with your head and knees propped on pillows (the recliner position). Because of the breast surgery, side sleeping is delayed until week three or four and sleeping on your front until week six.

Scars and scar care

Scars look red and slightly raised for the first six to eight weeks; this is a normal stage of healing. Full fading takes 12-18 months. With your surgeon's approval, silicone gel or silicone tape usually starts around week three or four. Protecting scars from the sun for the first year is essential to prevent permanent darkening. The abdominal scar is planned below the bikini line; breast scars run around the areola and, where needed, vertically beneath it.

Weeks 6-8: exercise and normal life

Once your follow-up review gives the go-ahead, exercise resumes in stages. The table below is a general timeline for a typical mommy makeover; your own surgeon's instructions always take priority.

StageWhat to expectWhat you can do
Days 0-3Hospital, drains, pain managementShort corridor walks
Week 1Drain removal, garments, bent postureResting at the hotel, short walks, cleared to fly
Weeks 2-4Swelling, numbness, posture straightensLight housework, desk work, driving (week 2-3)
Weeks 4-6Swelling eases, scar care beginsBrisk walking, light cardio
Weeks 6-8Garment period endsLifting children, gym, swimming, side and front sleeping
Months 3-6Most swelling goneCore exercises, weight training
Months 6-12Scars fade, final resultNo restrictions

The order matters: walking and light cardio first, then lower-body work, and finally anything that loads the abdominal and chest muscles. Sit-ups, planks and heavy weights wait until month three.

Months 6-12: the final result

Although most of the swelling in the abdomen and breasts has gone by month three, the tissue keeps softening, the navel takes on a natural look and the scars fade over six to twelve months. Keeping your weight stable during this period is the biggest factor in how long the result lasts. Month six is the most meaningful point for before-and-after photographs.

Practical notes for mothers travelling from abroad

Staying in Istanbul for 10-14 days allows time for drain removal and a fit-to-fly review. After you return home, follow-up continues through photographs and video calls. Our international patients page covers accommodation, transfers and bringing a companion.

Frequently Asked Questions

When can I pick up my child after a mommy makeover?

Because the abdominal muscles have been repaired, nothing heavier than about 4-5 kg (10 lb), babies and toddlers included, should be lifted for the first four to six weeks. Lifting resumes gradually once your follow-up review confirms you are healing well.

When are the drains removed?

Usually between day three and day seven, once daily output falls below a set level. Removal takes a few seconds and is not painful.

How long do I wear the compression garment?

The compression garment and surgical bra are generally worn for six weeks, day and night in the first weeks. Your surgeon may adjust this at your follow-up review.

How soon after surgery can I fly home?

Patients from abroad are usually cleared to fly at the review on day seven to ten. Compression stockings and regular walks during the flight are recommended.

When can I exercise again?

Walking is encouraged from day one. Light cardio starts around week four to six, gym sessions at week six to eight, and core exercises and heavy weights from month three.

When will I see the final result?

Most of the swelling has gone by month three; the tissue softens and the scars fade so that the final result settles between six and twelve months.
