How Long Does a Mommy Makeover Take and How Many Days Should I Stay in Istanbul?

By Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer · Updated: 26 September 2026 · 7 min read

A mommy makeover usually takes 4 to 6 hours of surgery, depending on which procedures are combined, and international patients are advised to stay in Istanbul for 10 to 14 nights. That window covers your pre-operative consultation, one or two nights in hospital, drain removal and a final check-up before you are cleared to fly.

A mommy makeover addresses the changes pregnancy and breastfeeding leave on the tummy, breasts and waist in a single, coordinated plan. It is one of the most requested combination procedures at Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer's clinic in Istanbul. Below we explain why the operation takes as long as it does, how the hospital and hotel days are planned, and when it is safe to fly home.

What does a mommy makeover include?

A mommy makeover is not one fixed operation but a combination tailored to you. The procedures most often combined are:

  • Tummy tuck (abdominoplasty): removal of loose skin and repair of separated abdominal muscles (diastasis recti)
  • Breast surgery: a breast lift, augmentation with implants, a reduction, or a combination of these
  • Liposuction: contouring of the waist, back, hips or thighs

Some patients also add an arm lift or fat transfer. Which procedures can safely be combined in one session depends on your general health, body mass index and the total operating time involved.

How many hours does the surgery take?

Operating time depends on the combination. The ranges below are a general guide; the exact figure is confirmed at your face-to-face consultation.

  • Tummy tuck + breast lift or augmentation: around 4 to 5 hours
  • Tummy tuck + breast surgery + liposuction: around 5 to 6 hours
  • More extensive combinations: can exceed 6 hours, in which case your surgeon may recommend splitting the plan into two separate sessions

Why do it all in one session?

Combining procedures means one anaesthetic, one recovery period and one trip abroad. Safety always comes first, however: longer operations increase the risk of blood clots and the overall anaesthetic load, so the total time is kept within a sensible limit. When a plan approaches that limit, a two-stage approach is often the wiser choice.

How many nights in hospital?

A mommy makeover is performed under general anaesthesia and most patients stay in hospital for 1 to 2 nights. During this time pain is managed, drains are monitored and you will be asked to get up and take short walks within the first day. Early mobilisation is one of the most effective ways to prevent clots in the legs, which is why compression is applied to your legs during and after surgery.

How many days in Istanbul? A day-by-day plan

Seven nights may be enough for a single procedure, but with a combined operation the tummy tuck sets the pace of recovery. The table below outlines a typical 10 to 14 night stay.

DayWhat happensWhere
Day 1Arrival, transfer, face-to-face consultation, blood tests and photographsHotel
Day 2Surgery (4–6 hours), close monitoring, first short walk in the eveningHospital
Day 3Dressing check, walking, second hospital night if neededHospital
Days 4–6Rest at the hotel, short walks, moving in the compression garment, drain monitoringHotel
Days 5–7Drain removal and wound checkClinic
Days 8–12Longer walks, suture check, clearance to showerHotel / Clinic
Days 10–14Final check-up, fit-to-fly confirmation, flight homeAirport

Patients who have liposuction and breast surgery without a tummy tuck can sometimes leave after 7 to 10 nights. Once a tummy tuck is part of the plan, we recommend allowing at least 10 nights.

Drains, garments and the first week

After a tummy tuck, drains are usually placed to remove fluid that collects under the skin, and they are typically removed between day 5 and day 7. The medical compression garment fitted after surgery reduces swelling and helps the tissues settle into their new shape; it is generally worn for 6 weeks. Patients who have breast surgery wear a supportive sports bra for the same period.

What the first week feels like

  • You will walk slightly bent forward for a few days to protect the abdominal incision, and sleep on your back with your knees bent.
  • Pain is controlled with the medication your surgeon prescribes; aspirin and similar blood-thinning painkillers are avoided.
  • Drinking plenty of water, eating a protein-rich diet and staying away from cigarettes directly affect how well your wounds heal.
  • Showering is usually allowed once the drains are out.

When is it safe to fly home?

Two conditions need to be met before you fly: the drains must be out, and your final check-up must show that healing is on track. For most patients this is the case between day 10 and day 14. On the flight itself:

  1. Wear compression stockings and get up to walk every one to two hours.
  2. Keep your compression garment on for the whole journey.
  3. Drink plenty of water and avoid alcohol and caffeine.
  4. Do not lift your own hand luggage or suitcase.
  5. Choose an aisle seat on longer flights.

Your flight is planned as part of the recovery, so please speak to your patient coordinator before booking. Details of accommodation, transfers and companion arrangements are on our international patients page.

Recovery timeline after you get home

  • Weeks 2–3: return to desk-based work, gradually longer walks
  • Weeks 4–6: compression garment comes off, light exercise begins; heavy lifting and carrying children are still restricted
  • Weeks 6–8: return to most sports, with core exercises reintroduced gradually
  • Months 3–6: most swelling gone and the shape settled; scars continue to fade for up to 12 months

For mothers of young children, the most practical advice is to arrange help at home for the first 2 to 3 weeks. After a tummy tuck, every movement that strains the abdominal muscles puts load on the repaired tissue.

When is the right time for a mommy makeover?

Good timing matters as much as good surgical technique:

  • At least 6 months should have passed since your last pregnancy.
  • Breastfeeding should be finished and the breasts stable for at least 3 to 6 months.
  • Your weight should be close to your goal and stable for several months.
  • If you are planning another pregnancy, it usually makes sense to postpone surgery until afterwards.
  • Smoking must stop at least 2 weeks before surgery and remain stopped throughout healing.
