For breast augmentation in Turkey, international patients are usually advised to stay in Istanbul for 5 to 7 nights. That covers your face-to-face consultation and blood tests, the operation and one night in hospital, drain removal if drains are used, and a final check-up before you are cleared to fly.
For patients travelling from the UK, Europe and the Middle East to Op. Dr. Göktuğ Esmer's clinic in Istanbul, planning breast surgery means planning the trip as carefully as the operation itself. This guide walks through what happens each day, how drains and garments are managed, how follow-up works and when it is safe to fly home.
What does breast augmentation involve?
Breast augmentation is performed under general anaesthesia and usually takes 1 to 2 hours. The implant is placed through an incision in the fold beneath the breast, around the areola or, less commonly, in the armpit, and positioned under the muscle, over the muscle or in a dual plane between the two. Implant size, shape and placement are decided at your consultation based on your chest measurements, existing breast tissue and the result you are hoping for.
If there is drooping, a breast lift can be combined with augmentation, which slightly extends both operating time and recovery. If additional procedures such as liposuction are planned in the same session, the length of stay is recalculated accordingly.
Why 5 to 7 nights?
Breast augmentation heals relatively quickly, but your surgeon needs to see you at least twice before you leave the country: the day after surgery and again just before your flight. These check-ups are there to:
- Confirm that the incisions are clean and closed
- Rule out early problems such as bleeding or fluid collection (seroma, haematoma)
- Remove drains if they were used
- Go through bra wear, massage and medication instructions
Most early complications, when they occur, show themselves within the first 3 to 5 days. Flying before day 5 therefore carries the risk that a small issue surfaces on the plane or in another country rather than at the clinic.
Day-by-day plan in Istanbul
The table below outlines a typical 6-night stay for breast augmentation. Your personal schedule is confirmed after the consultation.
| Day | What happens | Where |
|---|---|---|
| Day 1 | Arrival and transfer to the hotel, consultation, measurements, implant selection, blood tests | Hotel / Clinic |
| Day 2 | Surgery (1–2 hours), recovery and first walk, overnight in hospital | Hospital |
| Day 3 | Dressing check, drain assessment if used, transfer to the hotel | Hospital / Hotel |
| Day 4 | Rest at the hotel, short walks, moving in the sports bra | Hotel |
| Day 5 | Interim check-up, drain removal (if used), clearance to shower | Clinic |
| Day 6 | Rest at the hotel, gentle sightseeing | Hotel |
| Day 7 | Final check-up, fit-to-fly confirmation, flight home | Clinic / Airport |
If a lift is added or procedures are combined, the plan can extend to 7 to 10 nights. Once your surgery date is confirmed, you and your patient coordinator agree the right day to travel home.
Are drains used?
Whether drains are used depends on the surgeon's preference and the extent of the operation. A straightforward augmentation often needs no drains at all. When augmentation is combined with a lift or reduction, drains are usually placed to remove fluid collecting under the skin and are removed once the output falls, typically between day 2 and day 5. It is perfectly possible to go to your hotel with drains in place; you will be shown how to empty them and when to contact the clinic before you are discharged.
Sports bra and clothing
You will wake up from surgery already fitted with a special post-operative sports bra. It keeps the implants in the correct position, reduces swelling and protects the incisions. The general rules are:
- Wear the sports bra day and night for the first 6 weeks, removing it only to shower.
- Avoid underwired bras during this period; the wire presses on the fold beneath the breast and the incision.
- With under-the-muscle placement, tightness across the chest and implants that sit high are normal in the first days; they settle gradually over the following weeks.
- Front-opening shirts or cardigans make dressing easier in the first week, when you should avoid raising your arms above shoulder height.
What to wear on the flight
Keep your sports bra on for the flight and wear something loose that opens at the front. Position the seat belt across your hips rather than over your chest.
How are follow-up appointments arranged?
For international patients having breast surgery in Turkey, follow-up happens in two stages:
- In-person checks in Istanbul: the day after surgery, the day drains are removed, and the final check before you fly.
- Remote follow-up after you return home: you will be asked to send photographs at set intervals so the incisions, swelling and implant position can be reviewed. Our team remains reachable by message if you have any questions.
You can read how this follow-up system works, together with accommodation and transfer details, on our international patients page.
When is it safe to fly home?
After a straightforward augmentation most patients can fly between day 5 and day 7 with their surgeon's approval. During the flight:
- Drink plenty of water; cabin air is very dry.
- Get up and walk every one to two hours and wear compression stockings on longer flights.
- Do not lift your hand luggage into the overhead locker yourself.
- Use the painkiller your surgeon recommended; avoid aspirin and ibuprofen, which can increase bleeding.
If you develop a fever, a clear increase in swelling or redness in one breast, or discharge from an incision, your flight is postponed and you are assessed at the clinic first. These situations are uncommon, but they need to be seen before you board.
Recovery once you are home
- Weeks 1–2: return to desk-based work; avoid lifting your arms above shoulder height and carrying anything heavy
- Weeks 3–4: gentle walking and lower-body exercise
- Week 6: switch from the sports bra to a regular non-wired bra and gradually reintroduce chest exercises
- Months 3–6: swelling resolves and the implants settle into their final position; scars keep fading for up to 12 months

Frequently Asked Questions
How many days do I need to stay in Turkey for breast augmentation?
A straightforward augmentation needs 5 to 7 nights. If a lift is added or procedures are combined, plan for 7 to 10 nights.
How long does breast augmentation surgery take?
Usually 1 to 2 hours under general anaesthesia, and most patients spend one night in hospital.
Are drains used for breast augmentation?
Often not for a simple augmentation. When combined with a lift, drains may be placed and are usually removed between day 2 and day 5.
How long do I wear the sports bra?
Typically day and night for 6 weeks, with no underwired bras during that period.
How soon can I fly after breast augmentation?
Usually between day 5 and day 7 with your surgeon's approval. Stay hydrated, walk regularly and avoid lifting luggage on the flight.
How does follow-up work once I am home?
